The Shimmy is a dance involving fast hip and shoulder shaking. It originated from the Nigerian dance, “Shika”, and a Haitian voodoo dance. The Shika was introduced to America with the shipping of Nigerian slaves. In 1900, the dance was known as the “Shake and Quiver”. The dance became popular because it was featured in the 1904 movie, “Princess Rajah”. The shimmy was made by dancers incorporating their own unique moves and the Shika. The shimmy was then a favorite style of dance during the Harlem Renaissance.
